Very outdoorsy, very vibrant, older population. Very popular story time. Lots of charter school students, home schooling students, community of Mt. Shasta is more liberal than the rest of the region.
What do they see is the role of the Library in the community?
Subscribed to the “library as community hub” concept before Covid related closures. Kids would come over to the library after school (not a program—just because—about 30 kids on a given day). Library offers best internet in town. (Calif Ed Network—money to connect schools and libraries to high speed internet—about four years ago). Makes library popular. With re-opening, slowly transitioning to emphasize library-centered services.
How would they describe the children’s collection?
Children’s collection had not been weeded before 2015 but has been regularly weeded, refreshed and updated since then. Collection now focuses on reading prep and development, board books, easy readers, books local community members request and/or would find interesting–the focus is on patron driven acquisitions.
What do they see is the role of the children’s collection in the community?
The intent is to really get to know kids, finding books for everybody, paying attention to developmental steps, parenting resources, helping kids to have a good experience with books. Provide calming environment. Wants collection to be fun, dynamic, happy, and to foster security.

How would they describe the children’s collection in relation to local demographics?
Pretty reflective of the majority population and also has children’s books reflecting local minority groups. Mirror who is coming into library—make sure there’s books all kinds of kids can see themselves in.

Maybe 25% of the county budget, then she has her contribution based on city taxes, plus grant funds….in addition, roughly $500 she can buy on Friend’s credit card annually. Patron driven.
